Your Literary Path to

Self-Realisation & Inner Growth

Dr Lauren Cooper

Independent Educator & Empathic Facilitator

I'm Lauren —a first-generation academic, trauma survivor, and passionate believer that literature can heal. With a PhD in English Literature and experience teaching at top universities, I'm called to create spaces where literature serves as both intellectual engagement and spiritual practice, helping us understand ourselves and process our experiences in transformative ways.

I was raised in North-West England but now live by the sea in Dorset, where I'm learning to play golf and to paint seagulls in acrylic (without much success, but with much joy).

My background

I've been turning to books for answers since I was young, searching for pieces of myself in the pages of novels and poetry. Long before I was diagnosed with Complex PTSD or had language for my sensitivity and big feelings, I was drawn to writers like Sylvia Plath whose words seemed to capture my internal experience. When my mental health was at its worst and I had no tools to navigate the intensity of my inner world, beautiful language and powerful stories gave me hope. I would collect quotes that resonated, returning to them like touchstones when I needed reminding that there was still beauty and meaning to be found in life. Literature was my constant companion and, quite literally, my saviour.

My academic experience

As a first-generation and neurodivergent university student, I entered academic spaces feeling like I needed to wear a mask. I didn't know what to expect, where to find support, or have anyone to talk through my experiences with. I often felt pressure to put on an intellectual front, when what truly fascinated me was how literature connects with our lived experiences, our feelings, and the social contexts that shape us. While I deeply value rigorous thinking and critical analysis, I knew there had to be a way to honour both intellectual engagement and the tender, personal connections we make with texts.

Becoming the teacher I needed

When I began teaching university students, I was naturally compelled to create inclusive learning environments where everyone could engage with texts in ways that suited them. I integrated different learning styles, creative activities, and made space for students to respond authentically rather than performing academic "correctness."

The transformation I witnessed in my students was profound. Introverted and neurodivergent students who had been afraid to speak up, began expressing themselves with confidence and passion. I could see them discovering the joy of authentic expression, feeling liberated to bring their whole selves to their learning. This fulfilled me deeply and confirmed what I'd always suspected: the most meaningful learning happens when we feel safe to be vulnerable, to connect personally with what we're studying.

How I Create Sacred Learning Spaces

My approach centres on inclusivity, nervous system safety and healing vibes, to create a space where you can truly be yourself

Inclusive engagement opportunities - Multiple ways to contribute through writing, creative exercises, or simply listening

Clear expectations - You always know what to expect in each session, including content warnings

Voluntary sharing - Share only what feels right for you, when it feels right

Permission to step away - Take breaks whenever you need to tend to yourself

Sound therapy & relaxation - Gentle healing practices woven into online sessions where appropriate

Validation & empathy - Every experience and idea you share is met with understanding

Low pressure, high support - Gentle exercises designed to draw out insight and self-compassion
